Exterior Brightwork

During the “On Season” - April through October - we provide exterior varnishing and painting services on location at marinas, ship yards and private residences. With Larry’s knowledge of wood and Sharon’s expertise with the brush, we combine and collaborate as a team, while enabling us to work individually, out of our love for what we do and how that translates to quality for our clients.

While there are general principles in either maintaining or removing old finishes from the wood’s surface, each boat and its wood characteristics differ. As with people, no two woods are alike. Therefore, finishing wood is complex and not all applications can be grossly simulated between the broad spectrums of woods. Additionally, lumber from trees of the same species also differ, depending on how it is dried, when it was cut, moisture content and other considerations. Each application requires knowledge about the wood, as well as how varnishes and wood will react to it. Following completion of the work, in the Pacific Northwest, moisture is the biggest challenge for long-lasting surface integrity. We offer quarterly checkups alerting you to any potential trouble areas. If you elect to take advantage of the annual checkup the fee is based on the size of your boat, as well as other factors.

Typically, the checkup results are good. If we feel action is needed, you could be avoiding a complete refinish, if the issue is resolved in the short term. “A stitch, in time, saves nine.”

Each brightwork project involves a comprehensive assessment of the wood surface and surrounding materials. To ensure successful application of the varnish, areas like as plug repairs, the presence of fillers, and the condition of caulking is considered.

Our services also include painting to exterior wood on a selective basis to various trims and entrances.
